How magnetism affects timing
Magnetic fields can cause delicate movement components to stick together, making a mechanical watch run fast, slow, or inconsistently. Speakers, laptop magnets, magnetic clasps, and some devices can all be sources.
Detection and correction
A sudden large timing change is a common clue. A watchmaker can confirm magnetism and demagnetize the movement quickly with the proper tool.
